My DJ Biography / career started off with being in the right place at the right time. My brother was celebrating his 21st birthday party at our home in Chicago Ridge, IL, when all of a sudden his stereo broke down. In my house all of my brothers & sisters had their own stereo, and their stereo was the best…at least it was to them. More importantly touching another one’s stereo without permission would mean your certain death.
With his party sure to flop because of the lack of tunes, I offered to let him use my stereo as long as I could play all the records. He agreed and I turned his party into frenzy because so many people could not stop dancing. That was the birth of this 11 year old DJ.
My father tends to disagree. He told me that I was going to become a DJ when I was only four years old. One morning I made a mess of things with cooking oil, honey combs and my mom & dad’s 45RPM collection of records. It took my poor father a whole 2 ½ hours in a tub of suds to get those records to come off my body. He feels that because they were attached so long that they became a part of me.
As I grew up I would listen to as many top 40 countdowns as I could, and try to predict what song would become number one. My Favorite Radio Stations at the time were 102.7 WBMX, 107.5 WGCI and of course 96.3 The Killer Bee “B96”. My favorite TV shows back then were American Bandstand, Solid Gold, Name That Tune, and The Soul Train. I also had the opportunity to witness the birth of MTV & VH-1.
With all of this Inspiration coming from the media I started to build my equipment and repertoire from 6 paper routes. Later I would DJ my junior high school dances. When High School came along I would DJ all the dances there as well. For fun I made Hot Mix Tapes that I played for everyone that rode on my school bus.
To start DJ-ing at such a young age, I was subject to all kinds of criticism from my friends, family, teachers or anyone that had an opinion for that matter. Because after all, these critics didn’t know anything about the Art of DJ-ing or the stress that can come from it, or even the technical aspect of knowing how to hook the sound equipment & lighting up properly. To me, they just saw a kid playing some music.
I believe that the criticism I received, or as I like to call it, “Praise Miss Phrased” helped me to work harder and smarter on recognizing the wants & needs of others. It was on this one principle that I based my whole service focus. It was also very fortunate to have a very good friend who was an established DJ to help push me in the right direction and to always keep encouraging me to achieve customer satisfaction through personalized service. My friends name is Gary Hayslette, founder of DMA (Dance Music Authority) Magazine. Thanks Gary!!
DJ-ing was my way to pay for most of my college education. I went to I.S.U. on a small music scholarship where I pursued the studies of music business and music performance. I play the violin & the viola and was first chair of the I.S.U. Symphony Orchestra’s Viola Section, as well as the Orchestra’s Librarian and Manager. This collegiate career helped me to gain a vast knowledge of music along with a deeper meaning for all kinds of musical formats by becoming a musician.
It is my belief that my musical training & skills help to enhance my overall performance but it is my unique ability to recognize the wants and needs of others that gives me a marketable edge and lets me say that I am proud to be a Full-Time Professional DJ. I will provide an entertainment service that will be customized to fulfill your wants & needs by getting to know you on a personal level. My job is to deliver this service to you with the utmost Integrity, Honesty, and Sincerity along with peace of mind.
